When a family member was choosing between probation and jail, Our lawyer confided, "I tell most of my clients to do the time; otherwise you'll spend a lot of money, maybe all you have, and if you don't make it all the way to the end it just doesn't matter; you're back in jail for a much longer sentence, a probation violation. It's a trap; just do the time."
How sad is that? Probation was designed to give people another option, a way out of jail, and yet it fails most of the time. Either the people can't afford it, sometimes $200 a month just for drug testing, or they can't get to the testing centers and the classes with no car and no license.
The following states cover all the costs of probation, and provide transportation to the testing centers and the classes. spoiler alert - the map is all red.
Please send along any corrections or new information. I am not always up to date on all the laws in all 50 states.
